View from Tunnel Ridge Road Red River Gorge and the surrounding parks and forest is large and full of things to do, so we can only cover bits and pieces in any detail. We have chosen to describe some of our favorite must-do activities for newcomers, as well as some off-the-beaten-path trips. We have also provided links to other web sites that may describe additional activities.

The primary activities in the area are hiking, backpacking, rock-climbing, fishing, and canoeing. We'll try to provide some information regarding each activity to start you on your way.

3. Free pamphlets and maps. You can find numerous free maps and pamphlets at the Slade Rest Area, Hemlock Lodge, Gladie Visitor Center, and Shell gas station. The Gladie Visitor Center also has a topographic map that you can purchase.

Kentucky's Land of the Arches
Kentucky's Land of the Arches

Every traveler to Red River Gorge should purchase the following book: Kentucky's Land of the Arches by R.H. Ruchhoft. This book focuses on describing every hiking trail in unbelievable detail. It also gives details about driving through the Red River Gorge loop, providing directions and scenic stop-offs along the way. Written by a history professor, it provides a wealth of historical information about the area as well.

Hiking Kentucky: Scenic Trails of the Bluegrass State

Another excellent book that is less detailed but covers the entire state of Kentucky is called "Hiking Kentucky, Scenic Trails of the Bluegrass State". This book focuses on short scenic hikes and day hikes. It includes many great hikes in the Red River Gorge area, and many other hikes throughout the Daniel Boone National Forest.
